Britain in Space

British Spaceplanes of the 1950s

British Interplanetary Society Concept (1950)
A concept for a three-stage vehicle, the third stage of which would be winged. This stage would re-enter the atmosphere by skipping repeatedly off the atmosphere to loose speed. All stages were to be re-usable.

Armstrong Whitworth Waverider Study (1950's)
Two waverider vehicles (aerodynamic shapes which produce lift without the use of wings) were to be mounted back to back on top of a Blue Streak rocket. One waverider would carry extra propellant for the other, which would carry a two-man crew. An extra two stages would have to be added to Blue Streak to get the waveriders into orbit.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Yahoo closed GeoCities on the 26th October, and this site needed to be protected from being lost (although the some of the site has been archived by: Internet Archive GeoCities Project Team it is incomplete).

As all efforts to contact Stephen O'Brien have so far been without result, I have taken the unusual step of mirroring the content, whilst making technical updates. Obviously without Stephen O'Brien's involvement this is not an acceptable long term solution. To assist in this, or to make comments on the site please
